Delivering Excellence in Surgical Education
ESMSC (Essential Skills in the Management of Surgical Cases) is a novel international surgical masterclass aimed at clinical medical students, combining dry and wet lab SBL modules, interactive basic knowledge workshops and case-based discussions to provide a holistic surgical education. It aims to inspire undergraduate medical students to engage in surgery, with modules spanning multiple surgical specialties. ESMSC is formed of four cores that represent the principle values of a surgeon: basic theoretical knowledge, an effective systematic approach based on a novel algorithm, practical surgical skills and NTS.
GLOBAL NETWORK @ esmsc.gr
Built to integrate ideas from different educational systems
ESMSC was built using a global network of medical students, trainees, consultants and academics. Its ultimate vision is to achieve holistic surgical education adaptable to the needs and facilities of each local setting.
FOR SURGICAL COURSES
A step-by-step prospective application of the course pylons
We followed a prospective step-by-step integration of several developmental innovations to revolutionise the current landscape in surgical courses. In the same time, we focused to optimise the potentials of a multi-specialty mixed fidelity course. The nature of esmsc involves a massive skills-set spectrum (all surgical specialties) requiring to adapt a novel approach to design an ergonomic and effective curriculum set up.
Advancing Undergraduate Surgical Education
Can we develop core outcomes for undergraduate surgical education to provide an international standard for surgical education?
Should these core outcomes be classified per specialty, or unified through a network of clustered modules?
Can the Essential Skills in the Management of Surgical Cases course be reproduced internationally maintaining quality of education provided?
IN A NUTSHELL
International Marathon Course
Working to meet the future
Essential Skills in the Management of Surgical Cases (ESMSC) was developed during an economically challenging period, without transferring cost to the student. ESMSC is a novel international undergraduate surgical masterclass which improves performance and motivation of students towards a career in surgery. IG4 curriculum architecture aims to provide a framework for surgical curricula which can be adapted to local need internationally through the integrated dynamic feedback model.

The role of plenary lectures
We designed and delivered a series of plenary lectures from prestigious academics who influence education globally. This includes Harvard Medical School, King's College London, Imperial College London etc. We aim to connect with influential "global thinkers" and revisit any aspect of our education curriculum (Ci4R - iG4) to achieve excellence.
ESMSC POWERFUL RESEARCH ENGINE
the eMERG collaboration
Developing the new generation of researchers
Committed to excellence, we developed a powerful network to bring talented medical students together with trainees, senior clinicians and academics. eMERG serves as the dedicated research engine of our course. The iG4 curriculum concept, was purely an outcome of a 5-year intense research effort. eMERG led to more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and numerous presentations in prestigious conferences, most of which are the basis to change our curriculum. eMERG aims to provide high quality research training in evidence synthesis and primary studies focused in Medical Education and the esmsc course itself.
